How to Create the Perfect Indoor Garden in Your Conservatory

As conservatory specialists here at Dual Glaze Services Ltd we believe one of most appealing aspects of building a conservatory on your home is the fact that it will allow you to enjoy your garden all 12 months of the year.

Strategically-located conservatories benefit from all-year-round sun and provide the perfect setting for newspaper and book reading, even in the coldest of winters.

To get the best out of this tranquil space, ensure your garden flows into your conservatory effortlessly with the addition of pot plants and other greenery.

By the glass nature of their design, conservatories obviously become very hot in the Summer and homeowners should choose plants which can withstand the heat. Their choice should also reflect the position of the conservatory as south-facing constructions will receive significantly more light during the day.

Miniature fruit trees such as orange and lemons are a perfect addition to any conservatory and can be planted in Mediterranean-style bright pots on the floor of your conservatory to add a splash of colour to your surroundings. Palms are also a great plant to have potted on the floor of your conservatory to add differing heights to your foliage and make it even more authentically tropical.

For the windowsill level of your conservatory, cacti and yucca plants are good options because they require less water. Again, brightly painted pots can enhance the colour of the room and give an exotic feel to the surroundings.

If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, a host of jungle-style exotic plants are suitable for conservatory environments such as the Butterfly Bush, Lady of the Night and Queen’s Tears but it is advisable to get advice from an expert or garden centre to ensure the conditions of your particular conservatory offer an environment in which they can thrive. Light levels, temperature, space and water availability determine which plants will grow more successfully than others.

A miniature herb garden (in individual pots) will provide delicious aromas in your conservatory but make sure they are in a slightly shadier area and not placed in direct heat as they will dry out.

Climbing plants can really enhance the aesthetics of your conservatory. The Bougainvillea, for example, produces a massive wash of bright colour and because it requires a frost-free condition, can thrive in a conservatory. It can also be placed outdoors in summer to brighten your garden.

Once you’ve carefully selected the plants to create your perfect indoor garden, ensure they are well-cared for to get the best out of them. Dramatic temperature changes between day and night can be detrimental so try and avoid this by ensuring your plant is not subjected to temperatures lower than it can withstand or higher than 27C.

Keep the area well-ventilated and provide plants with a regular misting of rainwater with a spray gun. Also, increase humidity by placing a saucer of water on the windowsill or hanging humidifiers on radiators.

At Dual Glaze we have on offer a variety of conservatory styles to help you create your perfect indoor garden. From design to installation, your conservatory will be hand and custom built for your optimum comfort and convenience using the highest quality materials.
